2010 Wordpower News

Due to unforseen circumstances, the Young Alberta Book Society will not be hosting Wordspower in 2010. But check back next year!

Suncor Energy has partnered with YABS to deliver a literary program which sends authors, illustrators and storytellers to schools in north-eastern Alberta: public and separate Fort McMurray schools, plus five Northland Division schools in Fort Chipewyan, Fort McKay, Anzac, Conklin and Janvier (Chard). Since 2007, for a week in early Spring, the Wordpower team are driven around the community to the schools by a group of dedicated volunteer drivers from Suncor, to bring the magic of live literary artists into classrooms. The Suncor Word Power team also delivered a package of books by all the participating artists to each school's library.

WORDPOWER 2010

Request for Proposals

YABS is delighted to announce that the Suncor Wordpower program will take a team of Albertan children’s literary artists to the Fort McMurray area for the third time on May 4-8, 2009. Would you like to spend a week engaging and inspiring the children in Fort McMurray and its surrounding communities with tales of your craft? Your chance has arrived.

A core team of eight artists will travel to Fort McMurray on May 3, conduct 4 hour-long sessions in local schools each day, participate in one or two evening presentation events during the week, and fly out on May 8. Renumeration for the week will be $3125 (+ GST if charged). Meals, accommodation, airfare and travel costs to and from the airports will be covered. Artists visit schools in teams of two and are driven by a volunteer from Suncor.

Applications to tour with the program must be received at info@yabs.ab.ca by January 1, 2009.

Please include the following information in your package:

1) What would your participation add to the tour?

2) What significance would your work (stories, artwork, books) have to the students in this region?

3) Please provide a presentation outline for each age group: Grade 1-3, Grade 4-6, Junior High, High School. Please also indicate how your presentations would change if you were given a group of diverse audience age range (ie. Gr. 1-6 or 7-12).

4) Your bibliography.

5) Your resume as a touring literary artist.

The jury’s decision will be announced before the end of January. Questions should be directed to Stephanie Gregorwich at 780-422-8232 or info@yabs.ab.ca
