Biography |
Hazel grew up on farms in southern Alberta, where her mother read to the children every day and her father recited poetry. As a young girl, she loved books and secretly dreamed of becoming a writer. In high school, she sent stories to publishers without telling anyone. After a few years at the University of Calgary, she worked in Banff while continuing to write and gradually became published. It wasn't until she and her husband moved to Canmore to raise their family, however, that she discovered the wonderful world of kids books and realized that the hard work of writing could be combined with a good deal of fun along the way!
Today Hazel is the author of over forty picture books and children's novels that show up in many corners of the world. Her favourite things to write about include animals, humor, families, historical fiction from the west and the kind of fantasy that could happen just next door. Her favourite food is Jersey Milk Chocolate Bars. Her favourite place to be (other than in front of her computer writing) is outside looking at the mountains.
Hazel's three kids are now grown and have moved away but they still show up at home – and in her stories – from time to time.
