Biography |
A third-generation Albertan, Gwen McGregor was born in Edmonton, went to King Edward and Normal Practice elementary schools and Strathcona High School. In 1944, Gwen joined the Navy (WRCNS) and served at H.M.S. Cornwallis. After a B.Ed. at the University of Alberta, Gwen served two years as Regional Film Librarian at the National Film Board. In 1952 she went with her husband George Molnar to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. George stayed as a consultant at the Mayo Clinic and their children, Jane and Charles, were born in Rochester. In 1975 the Molnars returned to the University of Alberta - George as Chairman of Medicine, Gwen to earn a B.A. (Art) in 1979. Gwen has painted professionally for thirty years.
She is the author of two poetry collections for children I Said to Sam (Scholastic '87) and Animal Rap and Far-Out Fables (Beach Holme '96) and three first chapter books Summer with Sebastian, Sebastians Promise and Sebastians Collection Connection, (Hodgepog '97, '99, 2001), is a frequent contributor to Chickadee Magazine and has work in several anthologies. Her poems have been read on Morningside, animated on Fred Penner's Place, read on Sherri Lewis and included in the 1995 Sally Struther's T.V. Special - "The New Adventures of Mother Goose". |

Awards |
Gwen Molnar's poem, "Around the World for a Shortcut" won first prize in the Canadian Authors Association's 1996 Poetry Contest and Animal Rap and Far-Out Fables was short listed for the 1997 Writer's Guild of Alberta's R. Ross Annett Award for Children's Literature. In 2000 she won the Canadian Authors Association Exporting Alberta Award for Sebastian's Promise, a first chapter book. |
