Membership to the Young Alberta Book Society is open to anyone who wishes to join, though certain criteria must be met for eligibility to participate in our programs as an artist member. The annual full membership fee is $50 for touring artists and Taleblazers host schools and libraries.
We also have a supporter membership category which is for individuals or institutions who wish to be a part of the organization, have voting rights, have artist webpages maintained, or be part of our referral efforts, but who do not wish or intend to participate in any of programming. The membership fee for this category is $25. A supporter membership can be upgraded to a full membership at any time of year. Full memberships may not be downgraded mid-year, but may be renewed as supporters the following spring upon expiry.
Benefits to being an artist member:
• Promotion of you and your work on our website database and through ongoing public and media communication.
• The opportunity to tour with the Taleblazers festival. For the Taleblazers Information Page, click here.
• Professional development opportunities such as workshops run by your peers in the literary arts community.
• Opportunities to participate in all other YABS programs.
To learn all about our programs, and eligibility for becoming an artist member, take a look at our Member Information Package (pdf). For information on how things work, read our guide to Travelling with YABS, the Financial Side (pdf).
Please do note that at this time, we are only able to accept authors who have been published by book publishers that follow the traditional model and do not require financial contributions from authors. We do recognize that there are many quality works being published outside of the traditional model. However, this policy remains in place due to guidelines from national arts funding bodies which require that at least 75% of the published authors are not employees or owners of the publishing house, are chosen through an editorial selection process, and pay royalties to authors in order to be considered a traditional book publisher.
All members are expected to familiarize themselves with and adhere to our Abuse & Harrassment Policy (pdf).
