Seeds of Stories Bursary

Are you at an Edmonton school that would like to host an author, illustrator or storyteller visit but doesn’t have room in the budget? The Seeds of Stories (SOS) Bursary program aims to provide author, illustrator or storyteller visits to high-needs Edmonton schools at no cost to the school. Schools may apply for one of thirty $500 bursaries to go towards a visit from a literary artist via our Taleblazers or Year-Round Bookings programs. The application process is easy! Rules:

  1. There are two deadlines for applications: midnight on June 30 and midnight on September 30.
  2. Send applications by email to info@yabs.ab.ca or enter via the webform.
  3. All K-12 schools (public, separate, charter, etc.) located within Edmonton city limits are eligible to apply.
  4. Schools are eligible to be awarded one bursary per deadline.
  5. Applicants acknowledge that the selected schools will be contacted by telephone and announced on the YABS website, Facebook page, and Twitter account.
  6. Successful applicants will be notified within 3 weeks of the application deadline.
  7. Successful schools will receive a YABS membership for the 2020-2021 school year and $500 (plus GST) credit towards the cost of hosting a YABS literary artist via either the Taleblazers program or the Year-Round Bookings program by June 30, 2021.
  8. Bursaries awarded for the June deadline can be used for either Year-Round Bookings or Taleblazers.
  9. Bursaries awarded for the September deadline can only be used for Year-Round Bookings.
  10. Schools will select their preferred visiting artist from the YABS member roster and will work with YABS to schedule the visit during the 2020-2021 school year.
  11. Artist visit bookings must follow the policies and procedures of the relevant YABS program (see below).
  12. SOS Bursaries may not be combined with any other artist fee subsidy administered by YABS.
  13. Bursaries must be accepted as awarded and may not be redeemed for cash value.
  14. The decision of the judges is final.
  15. Schools will be responsible for any costs above the membership and $500 plus GST credit such as higher artist fees or Year-Round Bookings program travel costs.

  • Must take place during the dates of the fall festival
  • Visit will be scheduled by YABS per usual Taleblazers practices
  • Host is responsible for artist fee plus GST (minus the bursary amount)
  • YABS covers all travel expenses
  • May take place at any time of year as negotiated between host and artist
  • Host is responsible for artist fee plus GST (minus the bursary amount)
  • Host is responsible for travel expenses as negotiated with artist
  • Host is responsible for any materials expenses as negotiated with the artist

The program supports artistic experiments, organizational development, strategic planning and other activities that connect to the Aims, Ambitions, and Actions outlined in Connections & Exchanges: A 10-Year Plan to Transform Arts and Heritage in Edmonton.
